I remember this study that in psychopaths or serial killers, their whole prefrontal cortex would just switch off. But it’s always difficult with questions like this. Which bit of you is conscience and which bit of you is the ‘you’ that gets shut out? Science tends to think of ‘you’ as the one thing; your brain, your thoughts, your feelings, your mind, conscience, sub-conscience; it’s all just one indivisible you.
It appears to be so. There are stories out there about people forgetting certain things that they have done or experienced, that may have been very traumatic. These are sometimes known as “repressed memories” or as dissociative amnesia.
It seems to be very controversial though, some psychologists do not believe that this can actually happen and it has not been proven that this can happen.
The conscience is thought to live inside the prefrontal cortex of the brain and damage to this area can make people behave very aggressively and have a complete change in personality. We don’t know where free will comes from though, this is an interesting concept- that we can chose to behave a certain way….
I would like to keep my conscience with my brain at all times though, things could get a little messy if it didn’t!
There is a psychological disorder called ‘de-realisation/de-personalisation disorder’ where people feel as though they are disconnected from their body and their surroundings.
A lot of people can have a ‘dissociation’ which is a milder form of this, where you can just feel a bit like your surroundings aren’t real. It’s really interesting, but I don’t know why people might get this.
In a way.
