Question: what inspired you to become a scientist?

Keywords:

  1. I still have notes on the behavior of my dog and two cats, made when I was 9. I never realized I was already doing basic science.

When I was growing up I wanted to be all kinds of things; mostly a teacher, maybe a divemaster, possibly a politician or standup comedian (pretty much the same thing anyway). It wasn’t until I got to do experiments in Uni that I thought: OMG, this is awesome, I have to keep doing this!

For me it wasn’t really inspiration as much as falling in love, although I still don’t like coming back to work on Mondays 🙂

  2. I am a very curious person and have always wanted to know the answers to questions, about everything. I loved geography and biology at school (but was hopeless at maths). I think to be a good scientist you just nave to be curious.

  3. Firstly, a wish to try and make people’s lives easier and healthier!
Secondly, the brain is truly amazing and we know so, so little about it, so curiosity is another major inspiration 🙂
Thirdly, I love being in the very privileged position to educate other people about science and neuroscience in particular!

  5. I love eyes and brains!! No, I’m not a zombie, hehe.

I’ve always loved science, but I really stumbled into my field by accident – I took a first-year psychology class because I needed to fill a spot in my uni time-table while I was studying Law. During this course I realised that I was absolutely fascinated by the brain, and how we see, think, and process information. I did a lot of reading about the brain, and even went on exchange overseas so that I could study more neuropyschology courses.

I’ve loved everything that I’ve learned, and can’t imagine doing anything else now (especially not law!).

  6. I was inspired by the opportunity to pursue a career that I was genuinely interested in, and that had to potential to improve people’s lives. For me it stood in stark contrast to a lot of the other paths on offer. It’s nice to look forward to going to work each day (well most days, or perhaps some).
