Question: Does learning more languages effect your brain?

Keywords: , ,

  1. Good question! Language is usually processed in a part of the brain called the left temporal lobe, however studies have shown that bilingual people use other parts of their brain to process language too. It seems that learning more languages from a young age affects how your brain processes language, and means that it also uses more parts to do this!

  2. It sure does!
The first language that we learn is usually called the Mother Tongue and it lives in a part of the brain called the medial temporal lobe. Any other languages that we learn are stored in different parts of the brain.
Sometimes when people get diseases like Alzheimer’s disease, they remember their mother tongue, but forget any other languages that they have learned, even if they haven’t spoken their mother tongue for a long time!
