There is a difference between function and cells being alive though. Cells can be alive, but not functioning as a whole brain.

not straight away…when the heart stops, the brain is deprived of oxygen and other goodies in the blood. The brain cells start to die within minutes and as Josie said, the function of cells, even if they survive, can be affected for a long time after the blood flow has stopped.
