Question: When you have a concusion to the head why does hurt the opposite side to where you've been hit or knocked?

  1. When your head is knocked, the brain sloshes around in the skull, and bumps into the opposite side of the skull from where you’ve been hit! This bruises the bit of the brain which has hit the inside of the skull.

  2. Yep, like Emma says, this is because your brain actually got bumped and bruised on the other side. This is called a brain contusion.

    • It depends on how hard you hit it! Most of the time it won’t be, but sometimes, like when you’re in a car accident and the impact is really hard, you can have permanent damage.
