I’m guessing telescopes. In history, all we could do was observe, and still most of astrophysics is observation and calculation. But at least now we have the technology to go and check things out up close.
good question! people have been studying the stars and planets for thousands of years! they discovered things about how far away the stars are and that the Earth moves around the Sun by making careful measurements and then we invented telescopes and that allowed people to see even more amazing things!
Now we can measure radio waves and gravity waves to learn about how the universe began and what is made of and all sorts of other interesting things 🙂
