Hi Briddles — through many, many years of evolution! Basically it all kicked off in Africa a long time ago, with our ancestors, who looked quite a bit like us. But if you go back far enough you get ancestors of both humans and apes, at some point there were splits made, allowing for the generation of different species (there usually needs to be some sort of geographical split for this to happen, so the species evolve separately and dependent on environment). So, we didn’t evolve from today’s apes, but we have the same ancestors as them if you go back far enough!
