Question: What happens to our brains when we go into a coma? Does it completely go blank or do you dream, if so, what do you dream about?

  1. That is an interesting question!
I’m not sure of the exact answer, but when a patient is in a coma, it means that they are unconscious and they can’t respond to pain or other forms of stimuli like sounds, light, they can’t move and they can’t speak.
A person who is in a coma is not able to sleep either, because even when you are asleep, your brain is active and working. When you are in a coma, your brain is not active. So it means that you probably can’t dream.
Some people think that talking to a coma patient can help them wake up, the person in the coma probably can’t hear what is going on, but talking to them may help their friends and family help and it can certainly not do any harm to the person in a coma.

  2. There has been some really interesting research on how coma patients’ brains work!! Scientists used to think that if you were in a coma, you were completely unaware of things, however they started doing research talking to these people while they were scanning their brains. The doctor would ask the patient a question, and say for example “if you want to answer yes, think of playing tennis” or “if you want to answer no, think of doing a maths problem.” Thinking about these things activates different parts of the brain, and they found that the patients’ brains were reacting as if they were correctly answering questions. This has led scientists to think that the coma patients may actually be aware of their surroundings, but are just ‘locked in’ to their bodies.

  1. Wow!!! That’s really interesting! I’ve never really thought much of the brain until now.
    Thankyou Emma and Kristyn!
