Question: What are the Northern lights and what causes them?

Keywords: ,

  1. I would LOVE to see the Northern lights one day, we have them in the Southern Hemisphere as well, here they are called the Aurora Australis.
    Here are some beautiful photos!

I’m not 100% sure of all the facts, but I think the lights are caused by the oxygen and nitrogen atoms getting all excited by solar winds (which are bursts of energy from the sun) and the we see the lights as the energy that is released from this. It runs along the magnetic field lines of the Earth.
The magnetic fields of the Earth help protect us from these solar winds and radiation.
