When your head is knocked, the brain sloshes around in the skull, and bumps into the opposite side of the skull from where you’ve been hit! This bruises the bit of the brain which has hit the inside of the skull.
It depends on how hard you hit it! Most of the time it won’t be, but sometimes, like when you’re in a car accident and the impact is really hard, you can have permanent damage.

Yep, like Emma says, this is because your brain actually got bumped and bruised on the other side. This is called a brain contusion.
