Psychologists tend to think that babies develop self-awareness after about 18 months. Self consciousness is more of a state, peopel tend to develop that much later.
Scientists have done research which looks at what happens when babies look at themselves in the mirror. Early in life, they don’t recognise that the image in a mirror is a human, and then later they just think the image is another baby. It’s only at about 18 months that they will actually be able to recognise that the image is actually a reflection of them – so this is the age at which scientists think they develop self-awareness and self-recognition.
I like this one!
The part of the brain which is involved in the conscience is called the prefrontal cortex. This is one of the very last bits of the brain to mature, it is still growing and developing up until you’re about 25 years old!!
Thanks for answering my question!
