Question: Thoughts on Linguistics?

Keywords:

  1. I went to a linguistics lecture at uni once, it was too hard for me!!
Fascinating but has a lot of maths involved to work out how languages are related and formed. And I’m not very good at maths!

  2. There are lots of theories about how we learn language, and how we process it in the brain.

In our brain, language is mostly processed in the left temporal lobe. There are two main areas – Broca’s area, which is involved with speech production and syntax. Wernicke’s area is associated with meaning. So damage to Broca’s area means people will speak without grammar, or will just be able to repeat a couple of words over and over, and damage to Wernicke’s area means that people can talk very grammatically correct sentences, but they are entirely menaingless!!
