Question: How do people become allergic to certain things?

Keywords:

  1. Very complicated but we think its because the body’s immune system gets activated and this results in swelling and heat and release of toxic substances that affect the normal functioning of cells.
We don’t know why this happens, but some scientists think this is because we live in houses that are too clean and we don’t have a low level of contact with germs. This builds up our immune system so it can learn what to launch an attack on and what to ignore as harmless. This idea is called the “hygiene hypothesis”.

  2. Lik Kristyn says, it’s still a bit complicated. The body can be ‘tricked’ into being allergic by exposing it to an allergen and then inducing a rash. The immune system can be conditioned like Pavlov’s dogs that way.

But usually it’s prolonged exposure to something that activates them. It’s called ‘sensitization’ and it happens a lot with people who work with guinea pigs, rodents or birds.

Interestingly enough, allergies appear or disappear around the onset of puberty, where your immune system sort of flips over. I wonder whether hormones have anything to do with it.. I must go and look that up.

    Thanks for the question!
