Question: why do people get depressed ?

  1. Good question! Of course the first answer, as always is that scientists don’t agree and aren’t really sure. (We’re a uncertain bunch of people. Seriously, some of us even have trouble picking a breakfast cereal).

So far the most popular theories are:
    1. chemical dysbalance: which means the brain doesn’t have enough chemicals it needs for sending the right signals (neurtransmitters) . You may have heard of serotonin, a lot of people think that’s the main troublemaker.

    2. neuroinflammation: a much newer (and more awesome) theory that says that depression is just an inflammation of the brain. Recently, anti inflammatory drugs were used as antidepressants and they worked!

I’m doing some work on this theory, getting my brain cells to think they’re infected with something and then checking whether they can cause depression.
